Class Info

When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby.  Almost 90% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest die.  CPR, especially if performed in the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.

Students are taught CPR, First Aid, AED (Automated External Defibrilator), and Basic Life Support. Classes available for beginners as well as those who need recertification.

First Aid  – First aid is the assistance given to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury, with care provided to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, or to promote recovery.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – CPR is the manual application of chest compressions and ventilations to patients in cardiac arrest (having a heart attack). It is performed to maintain viability until advanced help arrives. This procedure is an essential component of basic life support (BLS), basic cardiac life support (BCLS), and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

The preliminary steps of CPR, as defined by the American Heart Association, are (1) calling for help; (2) establishing unresponsiveness in the victim by tapping or gently shaking and shouting at him or her; (3) positioning the victim in a supine position on a hard surface; (4) giving two breaths; and (5) checking the pulse. These are begun as quickly as possible; prompt action is essential for successful outcome.

Automated External Defibrillator – If defibrillated within the first few minutes of collapse, the patient’s chances for survival are close to 90%.  For every minute that defibrillation is delayed, survival decreases by 7% to 10%.  If it is delayed by more than 10 minutes, the chance of survival in adults is less than 5%.  This is why it is so important to be properly trained and equipped for a rapid intervention for a person suffering from cardiac arrest.
